Robinson Hall Construction Update, Sept. 7
Robinson Hall will reopen on Monday, Sept. 11, including classrooms, labs
and faculty offices. However, classrooms 103, 201A and 205 will remain
closed until Thursday, Sept. 14. Faculty who have classes scheduled for
those classrooms should contact their respective department chairs about
alternate meeting sites. Faculty also may choose to teach remotely.
Students who have classes in those spaces should wait for directions from
their professors. We are working closely with the Office of Scheduling to
identify any open classrooms that may be available for relocating classes
but this is likely to be on a limited basis.
Abundance of caution
As noted in earlier emails, the closure of Robinson Hall for the first
week of the semester was the result of a steam line replacement project on
the north side of the Glassboro campus. The steam lines assist our HVAC
systems in most of our buildings.
When the steam line was turned off during the first week of August so
repairs could be made, Robinson Hall was the only facility that developed
mold—mostly on older chairs throughout the building. To determine if there
were elevated mold counts inside the building versus what naturally
occurs outside the building, air quality tests were taken both inside and
outside of the building.
Temporary dehumidifiers were added throughout the building and a cleaning
and sanitizing plan was developed in coordination with an environmental
safety company. More than 750 fabric-covered chairs were removed and
disposed of.
To determine the impact of the dehumidifiers and removal of chairs, a
second round of tests was taken. Once again, indoor tests showed higher
levels of mold than the test taken outside. The cleaning plan was then
implemented.
After the cleaning and sanitizing, including cleaning all carpets, a third
air quality test was taken. A preliminary report indicated that 26 rooms
were near or below the outdoor counts, and not at a level of concern.
Three rooms, however, continued to show slightly elevated levels. Those
rooms are expected to be ready for use once a second round of cleaning in
those rooms has been completed.
Those three rooms will be re-cleaned this weekend and, although not
required, will be re-tested out of an abundance of caution on Monday,
Sept. 11. We will not allow access to those three classrooms until test
results indicate mold levels are consistent with mold levels outside the
building. The results from a final air quality test should be returned to
the University by the close of day on Thursday, Sept. 14.
Information for students
If you are a student impacted by the three room closures in Robinson,
please check Canvas and your Rowan email frequently for messages from your
instructors about alternative arrangements for any classes scheduled in
Robinson Hall.
For class sessions held remotely, students can participate from the
location of your choice, such as your home or residence hall. There are
also spaces on campus that students may use. These include common areas in
the Campbell Library, Chamberlain Student Center, other academic
buildings, and study rooms in Business Hall that may be reserved.
To reserve a study room for remote learning using your own device, please
log in to 25Live ([5]https://25live.collegenet.com/pro/rowan#...)
using your Rowan ID. On the home page, use Express Scheduling to select
the date, time, and room. Rooms can be reserved for blocks of up to two
hours at a time. The Express Locations dropdown will provide you with any
spaces that are available at that time. The Event Name should be your
name. Then simply click save and proceed to the reserved room at the
specified time.
