Thank you for your response.

To be honest, I don’t remember this event ever taking place during my time
on the Board—at least not in a way that was communicated to parents or
brought to our attention. I certainly don’t recall any community
conversation or parental concerns about it at the time, unlike what we’re
seeing now.

That shift reflects the fact that we’re in a very different political and
social climate today. With the current executive orders and guidance from
the Department of Education, schools are being held to a higher standard
of neutrality—especially when it comes to political or ideological
messaging.

 

While the Day of Silence may be described as “voluntary,” the reality is
far more complicated—especially in a middle school setting. When the
school promotes a protest through official communication channels, it
signals institutional approval. That approval carries weight with
students, whether we acknowledge it or not.

 

In a school environment, “voluntary” quickly becomes performative
compliance—students feel social pressure to participate because their
peers, teachers, or administrators are seen as endorsing it. Opting out
can make a student feel isolated, judged, or even labeled for having a
different viewpoint. That’s not neutrality, and it’s not choice. It’s
subtle coercion dressed up as inclusion.

 

Public schools should not be using their platform to elevate any political
or ideological demonstration. Doing so risks alienating families,
compromising trust, and undermining the principle of true choice in
education.

I appreciate you taking this concern seriously and bringing it back to
your team and the appropriate committee. I hope that in future planning,
the school will prioritize creating an environment that is genuinely
inclusive by being truly neutral.

Thank you for your email and for sharing your concerns.  NB has
participated in the Day of Silence since 2001 and although I'm not sure
how the event was run over the years, this is now a completely voluntary
event, and no student will be pressured to participate.  As we started
several years ago (I believe when you were on the Board), we put the
information in the parent's bulletin to make sure the parents are aware
of what is taking place in the school.  As you indicated in your email,
the intent of the event is to help students understand the importance of
encouraging empathy and respect among the students.  

 

You bring up a valid question/concern about the age of the participating
students.  I will certainly take this back to my administrative team and
the appropriate Board committee to discuss and reflect on our practice
for next year.

Dear Dr. Zuckerman,

 

While I know this will likely fall on deaf ears, I still feel it’s
important to voice my concern. I’m writing to express my frustration
regarding the recent school bulletin sent to students promoting
participation in the “Day of Silence” protest.

 

While I understand the importance of encouraging empathy and respect
among students, I believe it is inappropriate for a public middle school
to officially endorse and facilitate participation in a politically and
ideologically charged demonstration. Public schools have a
responsibility to maintain neutrality and create an inclusive
environment for all students and families—regardless of their personal
or political beliefs.

 

By promoting this particular protest, the school is effectively picking
and choosing which causes are deemed worthy of attention and activism.
This opens the door to unfair bias and could alienate students and
families who hold different views. It also sets a precedent that could
lead to unequal treatment if students request similar support for causes
that don’t align with the administration’s views.

 

Middle school students are still forming their understanding of the
world, and it is not the role of the school to steer them toward
activism in any direction. Instead, schools should focus on fostering
respectful dialogue and critical thinking, not organizing or endorsing
specific demonstrations.

 

I respectfully ask that the school review its policies to ensure all
students are treated equitably, without ideological pressure or
favoritism.
