Police reports
Dear Rockaway Borough,
Please accept this electronic request for public records made under OPRA and the common law right of access. I am not required to fill out an official form or use a particular software platform to submit my request per NJSA 47:1A-5(f), which states that an email from a requestor including all of the information required on the adopted form shall suffice in place of a completed form as a valid government record request.
I HAVE NOT been convicted of any indictable offense under the laws of New Jersey, any other state, or the United States.
I WILL NOT use the requested government records for a commercial purpose.
I AM NOT seeking records in connection with a legal proceeding.
Records requested:
Police reports from March 29th 2026 to April 3rd 2026
My preferred delivery method for response(s) to this request is by E-mail as attachments. Please confirm you have received this request. If you are not the custodian of records, please forward my request to that person and provide their email address to me for future reference.
Yours faithfully,
MH Student
This correspondence is in response to your Open Public Records Act (OPRA)
request received on April 13, 2026, in which you requested "police reports
from March 29, 2026 to April 3, 2026."
After review, your request does not identify a specific government record
or records with sufficient clarity to allow the Borough to conduct a
reasonable search and produce responsive records. Specifically, "police
reports" is a broad category that encompasses numerous distinct record
types (e.g., incident reports, arrest reports, motor vehicle accident
reports, offense reports, etc.).
Pursuant to the Government Records Council's (GRC) guidance, a requestor
must identify with specificity the particular government record(s) sought.
A custodian is not obligated to conduct research or interpret an overly
broad or unclear request.
Accordingly, we respectfully request that you clarify and identify with
greater specificity the particular type(s) of police reports you are
seeking.
Please note that the seven (7) business day statutory response period
under OPRA will not begin to run until a clarified, valid request is
received.
Thank you,
Kimberly Cuspilich, RMC
