Dear Kim,
The Hazlet Township Municipal Clerk received your Open Public Records Act
(OPRA) request on May 27, 2020. As such, the seven (7) business day
deadline to respond to your request was June 5, 2020. This response to
your request is being provided to you on June 12, 2020.
Your request is as follows:
1. “Total number of body cameras currently deployed in the police
department.
2. Date on which body cameras were deployed to any of the police officers
for the first time (year and month).
3. Invoice of body cameras purchase (if body cameras were purchased).”
Your request requires additional time beyond the seven (7) business days
to fulfill due to lack staff as a result of COVID-19. OPRA allows
custodians to seek extensions of time pursuant to N.J.S.A. 47:1A-5.i.
Specifically, OPRA states that, “the requestor shall be advised by the
custodian when the record can be made available. If the records is not
made available by that time, access shall be deemed denied.”
If your request for access to a government record has been denied or
unfilled within the seven (7) business days required by law, you have a
right to challenge the decision by Hazlet Township to deny access. At your
option, you may either institute a proceeding in the Superior Court of New
Jersey or file a complaint with the Government Records Council (GRC) by
completing the Denial of Access Complaint Form. You may contact the GRC
by toll-free telephone at 866-850-0511, by mail at P.O. Box 819, Trenton,

The Hazlet Township Police Department received your Open Public Records
Act (OPRA) request on May 27th, 2020. As such, the seven (7) business day
deadline to respond to your request is June 5, 2020. Due to current
circumstances with Covid-19 offices have not been fully staffed, and there
was a delay in responding. This response to your request is being
provided to you on June 16th, 2020.
You requested the following records:

With regards to item #1 – Currently we have 20 body cameras available for
officers, and all patrol officers wear one during their shift. The number
deployed at any given time varies with how many officers are working.
With regards to item #2 – Our Body Cameras were deployed initially on
April 22^nd, 2020
With regards to item #3 – The invoice is attached.
