Thanks for your help. I did a little more digging and the (original) house was actually built in the 70s, but maybe that evidence is in archives somewhere offsite.
Is there documentation about the oil tank being removed that you can share via email?

I did find the attached in the Assessor's file.
The information on the card was gathered in 1992. At that time the record indicated that the homes "real" age was 20 yrs.
The 5 next to it indicates effective age. That means that through renovations and what not, the house at that time was in the same condition as a 5 year old house

Yes, of course.
That is an open permit. Technically, the Borough signed off on the removal of the tank. That is what my inspector does, checks that it was removed. You see he signed in the lower left corner.
It was a leaking tank.
At that point in 2005, the DEP took over the responsibility of the tank and the leak.
You would be looking for a DEP, No Further Action (NFA) letter.
My colleague and I choose to consider the permit "open" until we receive the NFA letter.
There is none in the file. This office has not received one
